Opportunities for African Women |

The
African Women's Welfare Group (AWWG) is
a Pan-African London-wide grassroots organisation
that aims to serve as the voice of African/refugee
women by improving their social and economic
well-being. By creating opportunities for
African/refugee women and their families,
factors such as health improvement, life
skills, education and training and personal
development will help to facilitate their
full integration into the wider community.
One of the many initiatives AWWG runs to
improve the lives of African women is the
ESOL programme that teaches English to speakers
of other languages. The organisation also
provides FREE crèche places. As classes
are oversubscribed, enquiries must be made
to AWWG in the first instance.
The Here We Grow course is funded by Sure
Start; this is a project for women with
children from 0-4 years. AWWG provides opportunities
for infants to have fun with art and play
with toys, books and games. Crèche facilities
are also available and mothers can talk
with a health professional about their children.
This facility is available every Wednesday
between 10.00 am and 12 noon.
Reproductive Health is another issue that
is addressed by this registered charity.
This programme provides communities with
advocacy and negotiating skills, raising
awareness among various target groups to
ensure that RH is now firmly on the agenda
of service providers. AWWG is one of the
only organisations that addresses Female
Genital Mutilation or FGM. It works tirelessly
to raise awareness of this condition and
its health implications through support
and care services, and prevention work,
as well as awareness and education.
Refugees need to adjust to living away from
their homeland and make the transition towards
independent living. AWWG provides information
and support on a wide range of health and
social issues, including mental health.
It has developed a network of effective,
relevant and integrated health and support
services for refugee women in London to
enable them to improve their health and
well-being. It is the provision of this
easy access to much-needed services that
makes AWWG invaluable to a great many people.
Do not hesitate to contact the African Women's
Welfare Group if you need advice or further
information about their services. |
